The author of this book, physician Mary Newport, has been married to Steve Newport since 1972. After he was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's in 2003, she devoted herself to looking for anything that could slow the progression of the disease and give her more quality of life. That's how she learned, in numerous scientific studies, that the brain of patients with Alzheimer's is resistant to insulin (which is why this disease is also called type 3 diabetes); that ketone bodies fuel the insulin-resistant brain; that the intake of these ketone bodies could bring cognitive improvements to patients with Alzheimer's.

At the same time, Dr. Newport discovered the therapeutic potential of coconut oil.

Among the changes that the ingestion of coconut oil brings to patients with Alzheimer's include the improvement of memory, the return of personality, the resumption of daily activities and social interaction, in addition to the relief of various physical symptoms.

Dr. Mary Newport then became the first person to document the attempt to treat Alzheimer's disease with coconut oil, a product that she incorporated into her husband's diet. The initial account of this experience was published in 2008, as an article “What if there was a cure for Alzheimer's and no one knew?”, which circulated around the world and became the seed for this book.
